Vladimir Propp's Theory.

Vladimir Propp's Narrative and Character Theory
Vladimir Propp founded the idea that a certain type of character was used in every narrative structure. He suggested that every narrative has 8 character types. These are:

1. The Villain - fights the hero. E.g. The Joker.
The villain usually wears dark colours and is not very attractive. This is to juxtapose between the hero and the villain.

2. The Dispatcher - makes the villains evil known and sends the hero off. E.g.. Nick Fury (from Avengers Assemble).

3. The Helper - helps the hero on his task. E.g.. Robin (helps Batman). He helps by providing a physical presence in order to help Batman fight the villain.

4. The Princess - the character that needs to be rescued from the evil villain, marries the hero. E.g. Princess Fiona (from Shrek). Propp notes that the Princess is not clearly distinguished most of the time.

5. The Father - gives hero the task and identifies the false hero. Propp notes that the Father is also not clearly distinguished.

6. The Donor - prepares the hero for the task. E.g. Lucius Fox (from Batman Begins). He helps the hero by providing his with weapons etc.

7. The Hero - reacts to the donor, completes the task (saves the day) and marries the princess. E.g. Superman.
The hero is usually dressed in colourful/ bright clothes and is normally attractive.

8. The False Hero - takes credit for the hero's actions and tries to marry the princess. E.g. Lord Farquaad (from Shrek).

Theatrical vs Teaser.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes

(Video)

We compared the theatrical and the teaser trailer of Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes. We did this so that we could see the similarities and differences of teaser trailers and theatrical trailers which will help us in the process of choosing which one we should do for our trailer.

What did we find?

Teaser trailer:
-Fast Paced
-Short cuts
-Not a lot of content, leaving you wanting to know more
-Not introduced to many characters, only main ones

Theatrical:
-Slow paced
-Long cuts
-More content, giving away more of the film
-Introduced to more characters instead of just the main ones

Teaser and Theatrical:
-Music
-Voice over
-Introduced to main character
-Shot of the ape, starting from a close up zooming out
